I can't tell you how much of an impact this made on my mom. She wouldn't stop thanking me and she was bubbly and shining the rest of the night. Absolutely in awe of how she looked, I don't think I've ever seen her feel so confident and happy. Makeup is a rather controversial thing. To me, it is an art form that enhances the way we see ourselves, gives us pride. No one NEEDS makeup, but no one NEEDS fashion either. It's something we do for ourself because it makes us happy. I wish I could see Mom happy like this every day. Makeup can't fix that. But it is a step in the right direction for boosting confidence and seeing ourselves differently than what we are used to.
After makeup, I decided with the lighting and the limited amount of time I was going to have left to be with her, I knew we needed to document these moments. I brought my main camera with me on the trip just in case!
My mother loves to work in the yard and take care of her plants. It only fit to have her wear her husband's work hat and sit out in the front lawn with our dogs! :)
Something that means a lot to me is the documentation of our time as we are. Since I was teen, I have been trying to document myself by self-portraiture because I knew no one else was going to take those photos for me. No matter your age or condition, you and your family deserve to have photos taken of you as you are now. You will never be as young as you are in the very moment. Do it for yourself, your children, and your children's children. Take advantage of technology and the ability to encapsulate time.
Mom, these are for you. And I will give them to my future children as well.
